“Prehistory in Macedonia” Conference 2020

The international conference “Prehistory in Macedonia” took place on December 22nd, 2020. This was the sixth edition of the conference traditionally held as “The Neolithic in Macedonia’, which was chronologically broadened due to the large interest. Considering the pandemic, this year’s conference was held online.
Fourteen papers were presented by around thirty archaeologists from the following countries: Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, Greece, Turkey, Slovenia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France, the United Kingdom and the USA. All archaeologists discussed their latest acknowledgments related to the prehistoric cultural heritage in Macedonia, the Balkans, Anatolia and Central Europe, as well as the relations among these regions.
In addition, the latest data of the research of multiple prehistoric sites were presented, as well as those received after cabinet, field and theoretical studies. New methods implemented in the research of prehistoric settlements were introduced, such as spatial, geomagnetic, zooarchaeological, dendrochronological, functional and archaeobotanical analyses, but also the current approaches in the interpretation of stratigraphy, architecture, vessels, tools, burials, and human depictions in prehistory. The latest publication of the Center of Prehistoric Research was launched at the conference. It is the journal titled “Neolithic in Macedonia: Homage to Dragica Simoska”, which is result of the last year’s conference and fifth title in the edition dedicated to the Neolithic.
The conference was organized by the Center for Prehistoric Research and was financially supported by the Ministry of Culture. Considering its international character and especially the interesting topics of its participants, English was the official language of the conference, which was streamed live on Facebook.
